Getting to Hawaii "COVID" style - Traveling to HI is easier than ever!

Are you ready for your best vacation spot ever?!  How do you plan and where do you go for your Hawaiian Vacation when COVID has been looming (and seemingly never-ending)?  Be of good cheer!  Vaccines are here and they are improving the tourism and travel like crazy!

Hawaii has a 75% vaccination rate!

Many are asking the questions on how to plan a Hawaii vacation in the midst of COVID.  It can be daunting, but in reality these days, it is just a new "normal" way of travel.

The good news is that Hawaii is open for travelers and welcoming, with Ohana and Aloha, those coming to the islands for refreshment and escape.

2020 was no joke and as we move into 2021, the hope with vaccines is on the horizon.  Even during 2020 many restaurants remained open in Hawaii with social distancing and disinfection practices.  Throughout 2021 things continued to open up as vaccinations increased and the CDC guidelines surrounding masks and social distancing became universally adopted.

Many businesses, homeowners and even AirBnB and VRBO evolved and adopted COVID-19 safety and cleaning protocols to not only give travelers a peace of mind, but to truly take disinfecting and "security" to new levels.  They have asked "hosts" to commit to the new practices.

Hawaii had previously required 14-day quarantine, but that is in the past!  Per the CDC guidelines, this is now 10 day quarantine, BUT as of December 16th 2020 (wow so long ago now), all travelers just need to have a negative test result from a "trusted travel partner"** 72 hours before departure for Hawaii.  This way quarantine can be avoided.  Note that this also includes inter-island travelers.

As of July 8, 2021 travelers entering Hawaii from other states in the U.S. and its territories who have been fully vaccinated in the United States (including its Territories) may bypass quarantine without a pre-travel test. The vaccination record document must be uploaded to the Safe Travels platform or printed out prior to departure and hard copy in hand when arriving in Hawaii.

Other travelers can continue to bypass quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test result from a test taken from a trusted partner no more than 72 hours before beginning the final leg of their trip. Anyone without a negative test prior to departure must quarantine upon arrival. The negative test result must be uploaded onto Safe Travels or printed out prior to departure and hard copy in hand when arriving in Hawaii.

So, in summary absolutely make your travel plans!  With the evolution of vaccines and herd immunity, the infection rates will continue to decline.  Even with the new strain of Omicron, hospitalizations are way down!  Not to mention the new approved Pfizer treatment for COVID.  So plan ahead!  The islands are really booking up and looking up!

Prior to travel you need to be familiar with the Hawaii Safe Travels Program.

Prior to your arrival, if you are an adult (age 18 years or older) you will need to create an online user account and register with the State of Hawai‘i REGISTER Safe Travels Hawai‘i program.

Once you create your Safe Travels Hawai‘i account, you will next need to enter your traveler information and trip details on the program’s application form. It is important to get the correct test and upload the correct form. Visit Safe Travels Hawai‘i Help for answers to questions about the online application form.

Make sure that you have your COVID test from a Hawaii approved provider:

Some airlines will allow you to pre-clear at your home airport prior to departure which makes it incredibly smooth to skip any lines and head to baggage claim when you arrive in Hawaii, so make sure to look into that!

AlohaSafe Alert App

County of Maui Public Health Emergency Rules now require the download of the AlohaSafe Alert application or other Google-Apple exposure notification system application for all travelers on the Safe Travels program and those who obtain a limited quarantine exemption.

For transpacific and interisland travelers, downloading the exposure notification apps is a requirement to avoid quarantine for 10 days. This is in addition to a negative COVID-19 pre-arrival test from a trusted partner.

The AlohaSafe Alert app is compatible with Android and iPhones. Android phones should be Version 6 or above. iPhones should have iOS 13.7 or greater.

Maui County Travel Testing Program

All transpacific travelers are required to have a negative test result from a trusted travel partner before their departure for the State of Hawai‘i, in order to bypass the 10-day quarantine. The new policy takes effect today, Tuesday, Nov. 24, as COVID cases surge on the mainland.

All inter-island travelers coming in from outside of Maui County must provide a pre-departure test 72 hours prior to departing for Maui County to be exempt from quarantine.

All travelers are strongly encouraged to take a free, post-arrival test 72 hours after arriving into Maui County. Pre-register at Voluntary 2nd test upon arrival.  This may be mandated in the future, however on a positive note Maui is considering accepting vaccine passports as an alternative to getting tested.
